How do Phantom Cameras work?

Phantom cameras continuously record to a high speed cache memory. The size of the cache memory dictates how many frames you can capture and for how long. Once triggered the contents for the cache memory can be instantly reviewed, trimmed and or saved to the phantoms cinemag for ingest to mac or pc later.

What format do Phantom's record in?

Phantom cameras record 12bit raw .cine files. This is native to a vast amount of editing/grading software.

Which phantom is right for me?

The best way to select the right Phantom camera is by assessing what resolution you require and what frame rate you hope to achieve, from there we can point you in the correct direction.

Do I need extra lights?

Yes, despite high base ISO high speed cameras require a lot of light. For more advice on this please get in touch with one of our technicians.

Do I need to worry about flicker?

Yes, the wrong lights will cause flicker at various frame rates. Tungsten lights 5K and over are fine, HMI lights with High Speed Ballasts (not the same as flicker free) and most LED lighting are fine. This can be a mine field so please ask us if you’re unsure.

Do I need a technician with my hire?

While not essential, the experience and knowledge of a technician can allow you hit the ground running especially on short hires where there isn’t time to familiarise yourself with new kit and software.

What do I do about insurance?

For dry hire we do require our equipment to be fully insured against loss or damage as well as loss of hire cover. For wet hire our technicians and equipment are fully insured but we do require production to have correct insurance to cover our equipment while on your set.
